Wärtsilä has secured a Tier III certification of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compliance from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its family of 34DF dual-fuel engines.
The certification covers all 34DF engines manufactured from the date of issue until the end of this year, and also confirms that Wärtsilä’s 34DF engine is fully compliant with the EPA Tier III emission standards in gas mode operation.
The engine features a continuous nitrogen oxide (NOx) measuring and monitoring system for verifying emissions compliancy inside NOx Emission Control Areas (NECA), in accordance with EPA Tier III standard requirements.
Operators using the 34DF engine are also able to use conventional marine diesel fuels outside of NECA zones if required.

Wärtsilä has delivered more than 300 34DF engines worldwide to date.
The engine is configured with six to 16 cylinders, enabling it to generate 2,880 kw – 8,000 kw of power for marine applications.
Wärtsilä obtained an approval in principle (AiP) certificate from Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) last month for its natural gas operating fleet concept design.
Cosco shipping Heavy Industry (CHI) is also involved in the project, which seeks to provide operators with a more efficient and economical fleet design, while meeting both current and upcoming classification rules and environmental requirements.
