On March 25, a South Korean ferry carrying more than 150 passengers crashed into rocks when trying to avoid colliding with a fishing vessel.
What happened?
The ferry carrying more than 150 passengers crashed into rocks off the country’s south-west coast. The incident occurred when the vessel was forced to veer off course to avoid striking a fishing vessel. The vessel struck the rocks near Shinan county, some 400 km south of Seoul.
Rescue underway
The South Korean Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation to evacuate the 158 passengers and five crew members. Around six people sustained mild injuries from the collision. Around four Coast guard vessels and civilians vessels nearby were involved in rescue operation.
South Korea’s presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said that it is operating an emergency situation centre to deal with the case.
He said, “We’ve got a report that rescue operations are underway. The ferry wasn’t showing signs of flooding or losing balance. It seems that the ferry’s front grazed the rock after it changed directions to avoid a fishing boat passing by”.
Fortunately, no serious injurious, loss of lives or pollution to the environment was reported. The South Korean officials have initiated an investigation to look into the matter.
