The fire erupted in the cargo hold of a vessel ‘Golden Eclipse’ when it was involved in offloading operations at the Enel Quay in Civitavecchia.

The vessel was loaded with 2.500 tons of coal stored in each of the seven cargo holds and the vessel was offloading its consignment of coal at the port.

Fire erupts

An unexpected fire erupted in one of the cargo hold of the vessel and four teams of the Rome fire brigade intervened with support of the NBCR specialized in chemical or biological emergencies. The specialized teams boarded the vessel with thermal cameras and found three hot spots in cargo hold 7.

Among seven but only one of the cargo hold was found to be overheated and firefighters identified three outbreaks and they were quick to control two outbreaks whereas one fire took much longer to be extinguished due to accessibility issues.

None of the crew members or firefighters were injured during the incident. The fire was prevented from spreading to the rest of the ship and avoided serious damage to the ship and environmental damage.
