After a wind deflector is mounted on the bow, the 20,170 TEU ONE Trust departs for Southampton, as posted by Cruise Ship Profiles.
One of a kind
The largest container ship to have this kind of technology fitted to date is ONE Trust. On the smaller 6,724 TEU MOL Marvel in 2015, MOL, one of the three founding partners of Ocean Network Express (ONE), tested this type of arrangement.
New installation
According to ONE, bow devices can, in ideal circumstances, cut fuel usage by up to 4%, though real-world gains are probably closer to 2%.
The installation was completed as part of the ship’s five-year class drydock at the Qingdao Beihai Shipyard in China. The fourth ship in this class, ONE Tradition, has recently departed from the Beihai Shipyard, where its windscreen was also installed. Early construction photos of the shipping line’s fleet of 24,000TEU ships at the Imabari Shipyard in Japan suggest that the installation of a windshield is a planned feature for these vessels.
