Water Ingress in Engine Room

On March 25, a vessel suffered water ingress in the engine room during a regular control operation while the vessel was enroute from Fürstenwalde to Bremerhaven.

What happened?

The vessel ‘Aby/Lou’ with a cargo of 671 tons corn on the Mittelland Canal, near the lock in Anderten when its Captain reported a water ingress in the engine room. The ingress was discovered by the Captain during a routine control operation.

Vessel berthed

The Captain of the vessel intimated the water police, the canal authority and the fire brigades from Sehnde and Bolzum. The vessel was berthed in Sehnde close to the Bolzumer Bridge and divers were mobilized to the scene.

The officials and the crew members started to drain the water from the engine room and employed additional submersible pumps for controlling the water ingress, but no leak was found.

Oil booms in place

The officials also laid out oil booms around the vessel as a precautionary measure and the remaining water was pumped out using the vessels own pumps. The vessel was further scheduled to be inspected for hull.

On March 26 a professional diver was to survey the hull for damages and then a decision to be taken regarding further measures.
