On August 27, a weird chemical cloud caused the beaches to be evacuated across East Sussex, England.
What happened?
The reason for the weird cloud has not be determined, the experts have putting forth various reason such as a weather phenomenon or ships plying through the English Channel.
Residents treated:
Nearly 150 people were treated for stinging eyes, sore throats and vomiting from the ‘weird’ mist between Eastbourne and Birling Gap.
High traffic blamed:
In the past, chemicals have drifted across from industrial units in France, but this was ruled out by experts.
Winds had been light with some fog banks while aerial photos showed a higher than usual number of ships in the Channel.
Weather phenomenon responsible:
The Met Office have put forth a weird weather phenomenon when a pocket of low-lying cold air gets covered by a blanket of warmer air in a phenomenon known as a temperature inversion. This can mean that pollution gets trapped.
The spokesman said, “There’s a possibility that it’s something from a ship in the Channel and also the possibility that it came from the English coast”.
Smell of burnt plastic:
Bob Jefferey, of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Eastbourne, said: “Whatever it was, it smelled like burnt plastic. It hung about and didn’t move because there was no wind”.
Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, called for an urgent investigation into ‘how this gas came to be in our atmosphere’.
