Siemens’ Wind Power & Renewables Division will save 20% in transportation costs by using two uncompleted container ships to serve as specialized carriers of offshore wind turbines.

The specialized ships will allow heavy components to be handled as ro-ro cargo at dockside production facilities.  The ships’ cargoes also can be handled as lift-on, lift-off cargo with shore cranes when required.

The ships will be converted by Concordia Group in the Netherlands. Concordia said work on the first ship will be completed as early as the fall of 2016.
