All 42 passengers and four crew members on board a tourist vessel which caught fire and began to sink on the Great Barrier Reef today have been rescued safely without any reports of injury.

On Wednesday by 4pm the 23m-long Spirit of 1770 engine exploded and fire engulfed the boat near Lady Musgrave Island.  All of those on board the Spirit of 1770 managed to escape into liferafts as the catamaran began to sink.

A volunteer marine rescue boat with two paramedics on board and Water Police vessels arrived on scene shortly after to conduct a full scale search and rescue operation.

The boat reportedly was on a day-trip from the town of 1770 that morning.
