On August 6th, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi inaugurated the new expanded Suez Canal in the Port city of Ismailiya.

The expanded Suez Canal, called as the Second Lane, has additional advantages like:

  • Approximately 20,000 ships can pass through the Canal each year
  • Transit time got reduced from 20 hours to 11 hours.

A Maersk line report says, the Suez Canal accounts for roughly 7.5% of world sea trade and container vessels account for over 50% of the canal’s tonnage passage.  In the year 2014, nearly 1400 ships of Maersk line passed through the channel that accounted for 20% of the container vessel transit through the canal.

Highlights of the new project:

  • The cost of Suez Canal new project amounts to $8 billion
  • The new project was completed in a period of 11 months
  • 35 kilometers of the existing Canal was widened and deepened with a depth up to 24 meters
  • The second lane that runs parallel to the existing canal is 37 meters long

Claus V. Hemmingsen, Maersk Group representative, revealed, ”The extension will enable larger vessels to transit, benefiting not only the shipping companies but also our partners and world trade as a whole.”
