A New Year Eve fireworks display intended to entertain revellers turned to be a disaster on the beach when it caused a huge explosion.
What happened?
A huge crowd had gathered in Terrigal Beach to witness the firework display but shortly after the fireworks started it turned into a flaming inferno on a display barge about 150 metres from shore. The barge reportedly caught fire due to strong north-eastern wind.
Immediately, after the barge caught fire the crowd was evacuated and they were cleared from the area as a precautionary measure.
Two people suffer injuries:
Two people who were present on the barge suffered minor injuries and were taken to Gosford Hospital for further treatment.
The fireworks display was organised as a part of the “It’s Time for Terrigal” promotion, and attracted thousands to the beach. The unfortunate incident was attributed to bad weather and an investigation has been launched to determine the reason for explosion.
