Cargo Ship Loses Power Off St Alban’s Head

1874

On New Year’s Eve, a cargo vessel reportedly lost its power and had to be assisted by lifeboat volunteers.

What happened?

The 81 metre cargo vessel was enroute to St Alban’s Head when it reportedly lost its power south of Lulworth. There were seven crew members onboard the vessel when the incident occurred.

The lifeboat volunteers were called in for assistance and a tug from Poole Harbour was tasked to assist along with Weymouth’s lifeboat.

Tugs have a hard time:

The tug’s first attempt to connect a tow had failed and they were getting in position to try again. The tug got a line to the ship again but the ship’s crew failed to get the heavy tow line aboard.

After about an hour and several more attempts the tug’s towline was finally connected to the ship and they slowly started to head towards Poole Bay.

Weymouth lifeboat was stood down to return to station and the Swanage crew were tasked to escort the tug and ship until they reached a safe anchorage where it dropped anchor.

Released after inspection:

Once the vessel was checked for further repairs, it was allowed to be refuelled and proceeded towards its destination.
