Gaining prominence

All of the world’s top five carriers are now calling at the Port of Liverpool, which was upgraded to cater for the largest post-Panamax container ships through the construction of the US$530m Liverpool2 terminal completed in 2016.

Liverpool2’s development into an automated port will soon be explored in a new technical paper, due to feature in PTI’s upcoming Edition 84. To make sure you see it, subscribe today.

Port of Liverpool operator, Peel Ports, has confirmed that COSCO will call at Liverpool, joining others of the world’s top five, including CMA and Hapag Lloyd in establishing a presence in Liverpool.

Potential assessment

A Port Technology technical paper recently explored the potential of UK free ports post-Brexit. MSC has introduced a call at Liverpool to its existing routes and at the end of 2018, the Maersk-MSC 2M Alliance said that it will add Liverpool as a stopping point in its TA4 trans-Atlantic service, according to Peel Ports.

Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports, said: “There’s a real sense of momentum in Liverpool just now. Hundreds of cargo owners have already given their backing to the port as their natural trade gateway and now more shipping lines are coming on board too. In these uncertain times, one thing that is sure is Liverpool’s prime location for serving the heart of the UK market. We’re confident that this is just the start with COSCO shipping, especially with the recent success of our new MSC service too.

Successful trials

Alan Newell, general manager of COSCO’s China Shipping UK Agency, said: “Our trial at the Port of Liverpool last year was very successful. On the strength of that, we are looking to market slots to our customers with a view to growing traffic on the route“.

He further added, “It’s clear that Liverpool has a lot of potential as a gateway for many cargo owners in the north of the UK and we are confident that we are capitalizing on this growing demand at the right time“.
