ITIC has warned its ship and port agent members to be aware of people traffickers, says an article published in Seatrade Maritime News.

Illegal immigrants

The International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC) has warned its ship and port agent members to be aware of people traffickers attempting to smuggle illegal immigrants through ports.

Pretend to be shipping companies

The traffickers operating through legit agents provide a cover for their illegal operations.

They pretend to be shipping companies, approach ship agents requesting them to handle a change of crew including booking travel and accommodation.

Re-emergence of scam

Andrew Jamieson, claims director of ITIC said this is not a new issue but a re-emergence of the scam.

He added members apart from being left with unpaid hotel bills and other expenses, can face fines from the immigration authorities plus liability for detention and repatriation costs if the migrants are caught.

Crew change crisis

Coronavirus has impacted heavily on the process of crew changes and this appears to have shifted focus away from people smuggling. Traffickers are resourceful and can pass themselves off as a legitimate vessel operator.

Jamieson added, “Not every offer of business is genuine and due diligence should be carried out on all potential new clients. We urge our members, and others, to remain extremely vigilant”.
