EU Projects Revolutionizing Maritime Safety: MARINA And FLARE Initiatives

180

In response to the Ever Given incident in 2021, EU research initiatives aim to enhance shipping safety. Notably, the MARINA project focuses on collision-avoidance technology, utilizing lasers and AI to detect obstacles on the water’s surface.

MARINA Project

Running for three years, MARINA addresses the common occurrence of maritime accidents caused by human error. It employs advanced sensors to fill a crucial gap in surface scanning, alerting navigators to potential threats and improving real-time collision prevention.

FLARE Project

Lasting three and a half years, FLARE concentrates on limiting damage from flooding in distressed vessels. Recommendations include watertight barriers and improved evacuation procedures. These findings, currently under evaluation by the International Maritime Organization, are being applied in the construction of new vessels, emphasizing practical safety applications in the maritime industry.
