1963

On January 17, lorries were reportedly damaged in fire that originated onboard the shipping vessel.

What happened?

The lorries were stored onboard the vessel ‘Stena Line’ and due to dock at Harwich International Port, Essex.

The fire is said to have originated from a refrigerator lorry in the lower deck and rapidly spread to “several” surrounding vehicles. However due to quick thinking, the fire was put off in seconds and proceeded towards its destination. The crew members onboard the vessel handled the hotspots.

The ship was travelling from the Hook of Holland to Harwich International.

Port Incident commander Lee Lucas, from the fire service, said: “Once onboard firefighters began tackling the fire in sections and brought it under control quickly despite difficult conditions”.

Investigation launched:

Fortunately no pollution to the environment and injuries to the crew members were reported.

An investigation has been launched to determine the reason for the fire.
