LNG-fueled vessels break new ground, and Maersk’s green methanol vessel paves the way for sustainable shipping. The news from Manifoldtimes.

  • Methanol ship orders soar, crossing 200-mark milestone.
  • Steady growth of LNG-fueled vessels, reaching 100 crude oil tankers.
  • Maersk’s green methanol container vessel sets new sustainability standard.

Setting New Records

In an exciting development for the maritime industry, DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform reported a groundbreaking achievement in July. A total of 48 methanol-powered ships were added to the AFI platform, with 15 of them being retrofits. This impressive surge in orders pushed the tally of methanol-powered vessels past the 200 mark, showcasing the industry’s increasing interest in this alternative fuel source.

Steady Progress

Orders for LNG-fueled ships continued to maintain a steady pace with 14 newbuilds ordered in July. Moreover, this month marked a significant milestone, as the number of confirmed LNG-fueled crude oil tankers crossed the 100 mark. Among these, 65 vessels are already operational, highlighting the growing adoption of LNG as a cleaner maritime fuel.

Green Methanol

The world’s maritime landscape is rapidly evolving towards more sustainable practices, as evidenced by Maersk’s groundbreaking endeavors. A.P. Moller – Maersk recently celebrated the world’s first container vessel powered by green methanol. The vessel was part of Singapore’s inaugural methanol bunkering operation, where it was successfully refueled with bio-methanol. This achievement marked a significant step towards greener maritime operations and was accompanied by festivities, including a name-giving event, scheduled for September in Copenhagen, Denmark.
