  • The IMO-Singapore workshop explored maritime routes’ potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster energy transition, bringing together stakeholders from across the value chain.
  • Innovative route-based action plans were discussed, emphasizing GHG reduction strategies along shipping routes.
  • Collaborative efforts between the IMO GreenVoyage2050 project and NextGen Connect initiative aim to support GHG reduction measures in the maritime industry, extending their commitment to decarbonization.

Collaborative Efforts for GHG Reduction

The IMO-Singapore NextGEN workshop, held in October 2023, showcased collaborative efforts by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Norway to explore shipping routes’ potential in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Innovative Route-Based Action Plan

The workshop highlighted an innovative route-based action plan methodology developed by the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonization Hub (LR MDH), which won the IMO-Singapore NextGEN Connect Challenge. This methodology, based on the Silk Alliance, offers a roadmap for GHG reduction along shipping routes.

GreenVoyage2050 and NextGen Connect Collaboration

The collaboration between the IMO GreenVoyage2050 project and NextGen Connect initiative focuses on building capacity, sharing knowledge, and supporting the development of measures to reduce emissions from shipping. It explores potential route-based actions in the Asia-Pacific region, aligning with the IMO’s 2023 GHG Strategy.

Extending Commitment to Decarbonization

The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project, funded by the Government of Norway, has been extended until 2030 to assist developing countries in meeting climate change and energy efficiency goals for international shipping. The NextGEN Connect initiative continues its mission to offer inclusive solutions for maritime decarbonization.
