The Suez Canal Authority has inaugurated a new shipping lane in the Suez Canal, in east Port Said on 24th February 2016. The new shipping lane enables the giant ships to sail in both directions to effectively lower sailing times.
Highlights:
- Giant ships will cross the 9.5 KM-long lanes without passing through the Suez Canal.
- The shipping lane facilitates the international trade maritime navigation for big vessels as it is 18.5 meters deep and 250 meters wide.
- It reduces the waiting time for international ships passing through the main Suez Canal.
- The ships will not be put on standby anymore to pass the Suez Canal, saving $22,000 of waiting fees.
Mohab Mamish, Chairperson for the Suez Canal Authority recently said in a press conference that Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, President of Egypt said the construction of the new lane was completed in three months after construction work on the shipping lane was ordered to be accelerated.
