Derry firm Burke Shipping services have been fined £15,000 for breaching the well-being and protection rules reportedly after 3 men were injured after a fall from a crane.

The firm admitted to three counts of breaches in health and security to an incident which occurred on 20th August 2015.

It is reported that one of the men who started work for the company on the morning of the incident, were unloading bags of cement from a ship when the incident occurred.

It has been reported to the Derry court that three men have been lowered into the ship’s hold inside a basket lifted by a crane instead of using a ladder.  The basket which was not intended for personnel use was being lifted out and tilted and three workers fell from above 12 feet onto the desk.  The employees suffered severe injuries such as fractured vertebrae, collapsed lung and cracked ribs.

A lawyer in defence of the tainted firm has accepted that the basket used was not suitable for the task and was meant to be used in conjunction with a forklift truck.  The lawyer assured the court that a new proper basket has been purchased by the company since the unfortunate incident and the court ordered the shipping firm to pay £800 towards various costs.
