  • The new unit will also help develop the infrastructure to enable zero-emission technologies, and the physical infrastructure needed to power new vessels.
  • UK SHORE to take the industry back to the future.
  • Details of the funding will be revealed in the coming months and it will be open to a range of UK innovators – from small businesses to universities.

The UK Government is to create its first office purely dedicated to tackling shipping emissions and advancing the UK towards a sustainable shipping future as reported by Bunker Spot.

Supply and demand issues

The new agency, known as the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), will give £206 million in funding to boost zero-emission sailing and skilled maritime jobs. It will be based in the Department for Transport.

UK SHORE will implement a research and development programme, including a multi-year clean maritime demonstration competition, and will collaborate with industry to address supply and demand issues in shipbuilding and assist in the construction of greener vessels, such as cruise ships, tankers, and leisure boats.

Zero-emission technology

The new facility will also contribute to the development of infrastructure for zero-emission technology, as well as the physical infrastructure required to power new boats.

A variety of technologies, including hydrogen, electricity, and ammonia, will be used in the effort.

‘Climate change is a global concern, and it’s critical that we tackle shipping emissions, given our marine sector’s long tradition of green travel extending back thousands of years,’ said UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

‘I want UK SHORE to return the industry to its former glory.’ The first green maritime period was the age of sail; new technologies will usher in a second green age.

Green shipping

‘And, as we reverse the tide for green shipping, I’m looking forward to thousands of new jobs being generated across the country, from magnificent shipbuilding to tomorrow’s high-tech sailors.’

The cash will be announced in the coming months and will be available to a wide spectrum of UK innovators, from small enterprises to universities.

Maritime Minister Robert Courts stated, “This is the largest single investment in green shipping in the last hundred years and is further proof that the government is dedicated to working with the sector to create the green shipping technology of tomorrow.”
