[Watch] Grounding on the Rhine

1892

On November 16, a vessel reportedly ran aground in the Rhine after its bow got stuck on a groyne.

What happened?

The tanker ‘Brandini’ ran aground on the Rhine at Wörth loaded with 2,000 tons of naphtha. The vessel had left the oil port in Karlsruhe and was enroute to Antwerp when it ran aground.

Stuck at groyne:

The vessel shortly after leaving the oil port passed a fairway buoy on the wrong side and got stuck on a groyne at the Wörther Ground with the bow.

It was pushed perpendicular to the fairway by the current and ran aground between the groynes.

Tow boats refloat vessel:

The Dutch flagged container barges ‘Millennium’ and ‘Azolla’ started with refloating attempts in the fore midday.

However, the traffic was not affected due to grounding, but during the salvage work the river was barred for shipping for 2.5 hours.

The vessel was successfully refloated and berthed in the mineral oil port in Karlsruhe for further investigations.
