Container backlog

The Los Angeles and Long Beach port facilities were the child of a supply chain traffic jam poster in 2021. Dozens of ships were scattered miles off the coast, waiting for harbors and piles of containers to crawl on land-side cargo streams. Unloading vessels takes more than five days, and importers and exporters are experiencing significant delays in securing containers and chassis to transport them.

Major ports such as Oakland, California. Seattle-Tacoma; New York-New Jersey; Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Houston; Vancouver, British Columbia has varying degrees of backlog.

Some cargo owners and freight carriers may charter small vessels or use other tactics to move containers to smaller ports that traditionally handle break bulk, bulk, roll-on / roll-off cargo. Avoids congestion at major gateway ports.
