Sea Captain Eugenijus Tulauskas accused of being drunk and in charge of a ship in Belfast must deposit a cash of £5,000 cash before he can leave Northern Ireland.

The order was passed on Monday by District Judge Peter King who granted permission to the captain to return to his native Lithuania.  The captain was allegedly arrested by Harbour police on September 25 due to his drunkenness.  The seaman, of no fixed residence, was charged with having excess alcohol while on duty as professional master of a ship.

Previously the court had ordered him to stay at a residence arranged by the police and under those release terms he was ordered to surrender all his travel documents and report daily to police.

An exclusion zone was also drawn up to stop him boarding the ship again.

Mr Tulauskas’s employer, labelled as a well-established shipping firm based in Germany, has prepared to advance the money, the court heard.

Granting the application, District Judge Peter King said: “I am giving permission for Captain Tulauskas to leave the jurisdiction, conditional on £5,000 cash being lodged.”

All seized documents will be returned to Mr Tulauskas and he was told that he will have to return to court for a future hearing.
