Nordion Energi and ST1, two prominent energy firms from Sweden and Finland respectively, have announced plans to build a biogas liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden. This initiative aims to revolutionize bunkering operations by introducing liquefied biogas (LBM) as a sustainable fuel option for vessels calling at the port.

Liquefaction Capacity

The plant will have the capacity to liquefy up to 250 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year of biogas, facilitating the production and storage of LBM for bunkering purposes.

Innovative Bunkering Solution

LBM will be stored in a temporary storage tank at the port and supplied directly to ships via a pipeline. Alternatively, it can be transported to offshore customers by trucks, offering flexibility in bunkering operations.

Environmental Benefits

LBM serves as a sustainable alternative to fossil LNG, emitting biogenic methane when burned on ships. With no well-to-tank methane emissions and the potential to control methane slip, LBM offers a virtually emission-free solution for marine bunkering, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.

The collaboration between Nordion Energi and ST1 to establish a biogas liquefaction plant underscores the commitment of Nordic countries to sustainable energy solutions. By introducing LBM for bunkering operations, the project aims to drive the maritime industry towards a greener and more environmentally conscious future.
