Gold Standard & Stillstrom’s Emission Reduction Initiative

78

Gold Standard and Stillstrom have introduced an innovative initiative aimed at tackling greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping sector. Their ‘Methodology for Emission Reduction by Shore-side or Offshore Electricity Supply System’ represents a significant step forward in maritime sustainability by promoting the use of grid electricity and renewable energy when ships are at port or working offshore.

Addressing Maritime Emissions at Port and Offshore

Recognizing the substantial contribution of shipping to global greenhouse gas emissions, the initiative focuses on mitigating emissions during stationary periods, such as port stays and offshore activities, where vessels traditionally rely on fossil-fuel-based power generation, leading to continued emissions and air pollution in nearby communities.

Innovative Solutions for Emission Reduction

Leveraging specialized offshore charging solutions provided by Stillstrom, the methodology facilitates the delivery of grid and offshore wind electricity to vessels, eliminating the need for fossil fuel generators. This innovative approach not only reduces emissions but also supports the installation of green power systems economically by issuing carbon credits for emissions reductions.

Future Outlook and Ambitions

Stillstrom aims to deploy these clean power systems in European waters, with plans to establish five green anchorage zones by 2030. These initiatives are projected to collectively eliminate over 100,000 tons of CO2e per year, equivalent to removing nearly 22,000 cars from the road annually. This underscores a pioneering industry effort and invites stakeholders to participate in decarbonizing maritime operations.
