Strategic Commitments

IKEA receives commendation from the Ship It Zero coalition for its strategic commitments outlined in the FY23 Sustainability and Climate reports. The company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from logistics services by 80% compared to baseline FY19 by 2030. Building on this, IKEA commits to exclusively purchasing zero-emission ocean transport services by 2040. These commitments position IKEA as a leader in addressing climate and public health impacts in the maritime shipping sector.

Highest Scorer and Urgency in Decarbonization

Last fall, IKEA secured the highest score among retail companies, earning 89/100 points and a grade of B+ in the Ship It Zero coalition’s Shipping Decarbonization Report Card. The coalition emphasizes the urgency of decarbonizing the shipping industry, citing the need for major retailers to shift to zero-emission ships by 2030. With global climate emissions requiring a 43% reduction by 2030 from 2019 levels, the coalition sees IKEA’s leadership as crucial in steering the industry toward sustainability.

Global Shipping Industry Challenges

The global shipping industry, responsible for 3% of global climate emissions, faces challenges in reducing its environmental impact. While other sectors make strides in emission reduction, the shipping industry’s slow progress is attributed to its exclusion from the U.N. Paris Agreement. The Ship It Zero coalition aims to encourage major companies, including IKEA, Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon, and Target, to transition to 100% zero-emissions cargo shipping vessels by 2030, aligning with climate goals and mitigating the industry’s substantial contribution to climate change.
