South Korean shipbuilding major HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) partners with nuclear power companies Core Power and TerraPower. Joint construction of molten salt reactors was discussed in a meeting held in Washington state, USA, reports Offshore Energy.

Development Goals and Timeline

They focus on developing the first-of-a-kind molten chloride fast reactor (MCFR) by Terra Power. Aim to commercialize nuclear power for ships by 2035, and have advantages of Nuclear Power in the Maritime Industry

High energy density for extended operational periods without refueling. Reduced greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

MCFR Technology Overview

Operates at higher temperatures for increased efficiency and emission-free electricity generation.

TerraPower, founded by Bill Gates, emphasizes its efficiency, low cost, and carbon-free attributes.

Launching of pumped-salt operations in TerraPower’s Integrated Effects Test (IET) facility.
