Power Cut Plunges Massive Cruise Ship into Darkness!

According to an article published in Newsweek, a power outage on a cruise ship plunged parts of the vessel into darkness and left passengers without air conditioning or elevators.

What happened?

The Carnival Vista, run by Carnival Cruise Line, lost power during a trip to the Caribbean on Wednesday evening, according to a brand ambassador for the firm.

John Heald wrote on Facebook: “At the moment the ship (Vista) has lost some of the power from the midship to the forward section of the vessel. This means we have no lighting and the elevators and air-conditioning systems are at the moment not working but we have confirmed nobody is inside the elevators.”

Work on to restore power

According to Heald, the power remained on at the rear of the ship, meaning the Punchliner comedy club could continue its program.

As the ship has navigation control systems fitted it was “totally safe” during the power outage, Heald said.

The engineers are working very hard to restore full power and of course the captain and myself are making constant announcements to keep everybody informed and the mood around the ship is one of understanding,” wrote Heald.

Around ten minutes after his first post, Heald shared an update stating engineers were “slowly restoring the power” and air conditioning and lights were back on across the ship.

Passengers safe

In another post, Heald said passengers were “very understanding” following the incident. One woman asked for free drinks for the rest of the night. It was unclear whether her request was granted.

Vance Gulliksen, a spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line, told Newsweek the issue with Carnival Vista was “temporary and quickly fixed.” The ship continued with its cruise and the itinerary was not affected.

Company releases statement

Carnival said in a statement: “The Carnival Vista has been experiencing an issue affecting its maximum cruising speed. Unfortunately, we will be unable to operate the above voyages, as it is necessary to remove the ship from service to complete the required repairs. We sincerely apologize for the unanticipated disruption to your vacation plans. We are deeply disappointed that we will not be able to deliver the cruise we had planned for you,” the company said.

Passengers affected will receive full refunds, including for on add-ons such as excursions. The ship is due to restart journeys on July 27.
