A Sarnia firefighter was taken to hospital after being injured Thursday evening while helping fight a fire in the galley of a ship at Sarnia Harbour.

The firefighter was still in hospital Friday morning with lower leg injuries, said acting Platoon Chief Randy McDonald, with Sarnia Fire Rescue Services.

“It’s non-life-threatening,” McDonald added.

City firefighters, assisted by Point Edward Fire and Rescue, were called out to the Ojibway at the harbour at approximately 5 p.m.

“It caused in the neighbourhood of about $100,000 damage, and the cause was unattended cooking,” McDonald said.

The fire was contained to the ship’s galley.

“It was a hard fire to fight though, because of the cramped spaces and the inability to ventilate, but it was put out fairly quickly,” he said.
