Valmet Wins Deal To Supply Scrubbers for Seven 23,000-Teu HMM Ships

The Finnish company Valmet will supply scrubber system for seven out of the twelve largest 23,000-TEU containerships ordered by Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), reports American Shipper.

HMM Newbuild orders

HMM placed 20 eco-friendly containership order in April 2018. 12 with capacity 23,000-TEUs and eight with 14,000-TEUs of capacity as part of its plan to grow its fleet’s carrying capacity to 1 million TEUs.

Among the twelve 23,000 teu containerships, seven will be built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and five at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

Scrubber order

Finland-based Valmet has won the deal to supply seven scrubbers to the newbuilds at DSME. The order for the scrubbers was included in Valmet’s fourth-quarter 2018 orders received and value of the order was not disclosed.

The deliveries of the scrubbers will begin this year for the ships, expected to be delivered to HMM by the second quarter of 2020.

About the scrubber system

The installation of the exhaust gas cleaning system will allow the giant boxships to continue burning the 3.5% high sulphur bunker fuel beyond 1 January 2020.

The scrubber system deliveries will include “tailor-made hybrid scrubbing systems for main engine and generator engines including auxiliary systems and automation,” Valmet said.

The exhaust gas is washed with seawater in open-loop mode and recirculated water and alkali in closed loop mode, he added.

HMM fleet info

In addition to installing scrubbers on the twelve 23,000 teu boxships, HMM will install scrubbers on another eight 15,000 teu containerships to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The Korean ship owner also plans to retrofit scrubbers on 19 containerships currently in operation by the first half of 2020. Furthermore, HMM’s two 11,000-TEU containerships, HMM Promise and HMM Blessing, which were delivered in August, and five VLCCs starting delivery from January 2019 are also retrofitted with scrubbers.

This brings the number of scrubber fitted HMM ships to 44, out of more than 100 ships in its fleet.

MoU for scrubber funding

HMM signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a fund for scrubber installation. The 153.3 billion South Korean won ($135 million) fund includes 46 billion won invested by HMM, a loan of 62.3 billion won from the Korea Ocean Business Corp. and 45 billion won invested by Hyundai Corporation, SKTI, Hyundai Global Service, DSEC and Panasia.
