Vessel Collides with Highway Bridge 25 People Hurt

On December 27, a tourist vessel reportedly struck a highway bridge in Western Germany injuring 25 people.

What happened?

The tourist vessel ‘Swiss Crystal’ reportedly struck a highway bridge on the river Rhine in Western Germany.

The vessel was carrying 129 people when it collided against a pillar of the bridge near Duisburg. The water level was high at the time and the pillar is usually on land.

Passengers rescued:

The tourist vessel was heading downstream on the last leg of a Rhine tour starting and ending in the Dutch city of Arnhem.

The 103 passengers with 26 crew members were rescued by another cargo vessel and taken to hospitals for further treatment. During the collision, 25 people were hurt and were admitted for further treatment.

Bridge closed:

The bridge was closed for several hours as a precaution, but structural engineers cleared it to reopen after carrying out mandatory checks.
