A group of 100 crew left the Italian cruise ship docked in southwestern Japan for their countries on Tuesday, reports Kyodo News.

A group of 130 Filipino and other crew members left a cruise ship docked in southwestern Japan for their countries on Tuesday. It was reported that the ship had no passengers.

According to the Nagasaki’s prefectural government, the crew of 125 Filipino and 5 other nationals were allowed to disembark after they tested negative for coronavirus, while some 400 remained aboard.

Cases when ship was initially docked in Japan

  • The Costa Cruises-operated ship was taken into a shipyard in Nagasaki city, in western Japan, in late February by a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (7011.T).
  • The virus pandemic scuttled plans for scheduled repairs in China.
  • The vessel has 623 crew, and after detecting one had been infected tests were carried out on close contacts among fellow crew members.
  • Nagasaki prefectural authorities said they had confirmed a total 34 infections on the ship and appealed for help from the central government to tackle the incident.

More cases were reported soon

The Nagasaki prefecture official said 57 more crew had tested positive, bringing the total infections on board the Costa Atlantica to 148, roughly one-quarter of the vessel’s 623 crew members.
